Sustaining Maternal Health through Distance Monitoring and Active Risk Screening

The Anjani Mashelkar Foundation recently showcased Savemom, the lead innovation of JioVio Healthcare, in its esteemed spotlight on game-changing healthcare solutions. The accolade reflects Savemom’s trailblazing efforts in lowering maternal and infant mortality in India through intelligent, data-based care.

A Crisis That Demands Immediate Innovation

Each day, an estimated 70 women die of childbirth-related mortality in India—a sobering figure, especially since a large percentage of these deaths are preventable. The most common contributing factors include inadequate monitoring, delay of interventions that are needed, and overburdened healthcare facilities in rural and resource-poor areas.

Despite an improvement in infant mortality rate (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR) year after year, a large disparity in preventive and urgent maternal care continues to prevail, particularly in at-risk groups. Savemom was established in order to fill this gap.

Savemom: A Predictive, Integrated Method

Savemom provides a low-cost, IoT-enabled maternal care platform for frequent monitoring and AI-driven early risk prediction. It is built around two smart devices:

  • AlloTricoder, a point-of-care diagnostic instrument employed by practitioners to take significant health measurements during the delivery of care.
  • Allowear is a wearable device pregnant women wear to monitor crucial measurements constantly during pregnancy.

The information gathered by these devices is transmitted to the Savemom portal, where a decision support system based on artificial intelligence examines trends and identifies possible dangers—even during the first trimester. This enables early, personalized intervention strategies that are tracked and changed during the 1000-day journey of maternal care.

National Coverage and Global Recognition

Since its launch in 2016, Savemom has impacted more than 36,000 women across four Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh via pilot projects, Government collaborations, and NGO partnerships.

Its evidence-based, scalable model has been lauded by top institutions such as Harvard Business School, Yale School of Public Health, and the World Health Organization. Savemom also collaborates with Deakin University’s A2I2 Centre for AI development to further improve its predictive power.

A Movement Rather Than Just a Product

The integration of Savemom into the Anjani Mashelkar Foundation platform is more than a triumph; it is a validation of its core position in transforming maternal care throughout all of India. With empathy, imagination, and deep impact, Savemom is addressing a critical health issue while, in the process, offering opportunities for empowering women, building families, and saving lives.
