Savemom’s journey and innovation have been recognised in a distinguished case study published by Ivey Publishing, titled “Savemom: The Smart Wearable Solution for Maternal Health Care” (Case Reference No. W27806). This 14-page case is now available on The Case Centre and is intended for use in MBA and postgraduate-level programs around the world.
Solving a Life-Threatening Problem with Technology
In January 2020, the Founders of JioVio Healthcare reflected on five transformative years of establishing Savemom. Savemom, a cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform, was created to address rural India’s high Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR). Its goal is to detect difficulties during pregnancy early and facilitate safe births.
Senthilkumar, co-founder, worked extensively with communities in central and southern India to iterate the platform based on real-time stakeholder feedback. The end result was an effective combination of:
- A wearable gadget for expecting mothers.
- A medical measurement toolbox.
- A cloud platform designed for healthcare providers.
Together, these components enabled frontline health workers and doctors to monitor patients’ health remotely and intervene before it was too late.
A Real-World Lesson in Design Thinking
Although Savemom’s idea showed great potential, there were still some obstacles. When doctors were consulted, their reaction was clear: they were overwhelmed by the volume of patient data, which considerably increased their workload.
This stumbling block served as a turning point in the learning process. The case demonstrates how social entrepreneurs must respond rapidly to real-world difficulties. Savemom improved its systems by iterating continuously on prototypes and soliciting active feedback from users.
