Savemom Featured in The Case Centre

Savemom, JioVio Healthcare’s flagship product, was recently featured in The Case Centre with the title “Savemom: The Smart Wearable Solution for Maternal Health Care” (Case Reference No. W27806). The case study, written by Renuka Kamath (S P Jain Institute of Management & Research) and V Shrinath (The Better Product Studio), focusses on Savemom’s ground-breaking quest to revolutionise maternal healthcare in rural India.

Bridging Gaps in Maternal Healthcare

Savemom, founded by social entrepreneur Senthilkumar and his colleagues, was developed out of a strong desire to reduce India’s maternal death ratio. Savemom’s cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) platform enables early detection of preventable problems during pregnancy, resulting in safer delivery for women in remote areas of the country.

The Savemom solution contains:

  • A wearable gadget for expecting mothers.
  • A medical measuring gadget.
  • An online portal where healthcare providers can monitor patient data.

Savemom allows for timely intervention and continuous treatment by collecting real-time health metrics such as Blood Pressure, Glucose levels, Heart rate, and Oxygen saturation, even in places with little medical infrastructure.

An Iterative Journey of Innovation

True to the spirit of design thinking, the Savemom initiative evolved via ongoing engagement with healthcare staff, patients, and local stakeholders in rural India. Multiple prototypes and versions were developed based on field feedback, optimising both the device and the software to maximise impact.

However, the voyage was not without hurdles. During the initial implementation, doctors expressed worries about the massive amount of patient data they had to analyse every day, which significantly increased their workload. Senthilkumar and his team began working on enhancing the system to improve data management and prioritise priority situations after receiving critical comments.

A Case Study in Social Entrepreneurship

The Savemom narrative, now recognised with this renowned case study, exemplifies social entrepreneurship, design thinking, and long-term innovation. It demonstrates how compassionate problem-solving, combined with cutting-edge technology, may result in significant societal change, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The example is now being used as a teaching tool in postgraduate courses, motivating future leaders to create enterprises that serve humanity with compassion and inventiveness.
